High Performance Homes

Southern Evergreen focuses on building high performance homes, which is a home that will save you money on your energy and utility bills. These savings are made possible by reducing the amount of energy consumed. There are often government tax breaks and credits for energy saving appliances and equipment.

High performance homes are built to a grade A standard. Local code requirements would receive a passing C. This is part of the reason that high performance homes are able to produce significant energy savings.

The professionals at Southern Evergreen are all Certified Green Professionals, a designation from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). We are also an ENERGY STAR certified building firm. This means that we focus on designing, building and renovating homes that are energy efficient.

Although your project may not be eligible for the ENERGY STAR or Certified Green programs, we incorporate the basic concepts in every project we do. We think in terms of high performance and efficiency. Southern Evergreen focuses on sustainable buildings, renovations and repairs.

In particular, the Southern Evergreen team focuses on keeping your new room or home as energy efficient as possible. Here are some help tips.

  • Windows – install ENERGY STAR windows and use curtains to insulate your home.
  • Ventilation – using non-toxic materials and non-polluting appliances, furniture and furnishings to reduce internal toxins.
  • Lighting – new lighting technologies can reduce lighting energy use in your home by 50% to 75%.
  • Sun and Shade – we can’t change the direction your home faces, but we can use techniques to shade your home from the hot summer sun and allow warm winter sun to heat your home.
  • Insulation – reduce energy waste by checking where air is leaking through openings in your ceilings, walls, and floors.
  • Appliances – look for ENERGY STAR appliances that save money over time by lowering your utility bill.
  • Energy Consumption – energy-efficient furnaces alone will not have as great an impact on your energy bills as using the whole-house approach.
  • Solar Heating & Cooling – using passive solar design techniques to heat and cool your home is environmentally friendly and cost effective.
  • Water Heating – there are several ways to cut your water and water heating bills, like lowering the thermostat on your water heater.
  • Water Saving – save water and money by fixing leaky water pipes, dripping faucets and installing low-flow shower heads.
  • Air Ducts – sealing your ducts with mastic can prevent leaks.
